Pinnie Progress

Currently, I'm in a frenzy of swap commitments...and my machine is still at the Pfaff doctor awaiting a new take up lever, so I'm having fun in (almost) manual mode with my old 1212. I keep moving my right knee over, trying to hit the non-existent knee lift. Apparently I'm a creature of habit!

So, two pin cushions are done. This one is for the Scrappy Pin Cushion Swap on Flickr. It is for a secret partner. I do hope she likes it. In her favorites, she likes novelty pin cushions a lot, but to be honest I am not very good at making little animals and toadstools...etc. My hands just don't seem able to deal with tiny stuffed pieces. So, I'm hoping Lizzy House's "Red Letter Day" duckies (which I think are super cute) will suffice.

Red Letter Threadcatcher

I'm all about useful pin cushions, so I love making, gifting and selling these threadcatchers. They are perfect to sit beside your machine and much nicer than a paper bag taped to your table! I fill them with sterilized sand (the kind that used to be in the ashtrays outside hotel elevators). The lumber yard is only too happy to sell me the 20kg bags of the stuff - as you can imagine with zero public-building smoking these days, there's not much demand for it.

Red Letter threadcatcher

The flying geese (or should I say ducks) around the blue ducky were drafted on paper and foundation pieced. They are 1" wide. It was fun to do since I had not foundation pieced anything for ages.

The second thread catcher I made is for my partner Tiffany in the Pin Cushion Pass....remember Tiffany won my Poppyprint in Print giveaway, so I will be packaging her winnings along with her pin cushion. It's a surprise for her, so that's why it's just a cheeky, sneaky peek at this point.

Cut Out Domesticity Threadcatcher

This may be my all time fav thread catcher that I've made (and I think I've made about 50!). I first had to check to see if Tiffany had a wee bit of rebel in her before deciding to send this. I've called it "Cut Out Domesticity" and you'll see why when she receives it!

I'm a bit out of sorts and rather tired today after waking up to a yelping, howling dog at 3:30. Flynn usually takes himself out for a pee around 3-4 a.m. and last night a raccoon met him in the back yard. Flynn is one feisty miniature Dachshund, but that raccoon got the better of him and he's got several puncture wounds in his hind quarters, hind leg and under his tail. Poor guy, the vet drugged him up on antibiotics and painkillers so he's sleeping now, but rather swollen and sore. We'll have to close up the doggie door for summer!

Oh my! I am sorry to hear about your dog.
I love the thread catchers. I was going to email to ask what you used to weigh them down but now I know. Instead, I am wondering if the sand sneaks through the fabric at all or if it is lined to cut down on that.

Oh man! Poor pup! Sorry to hear this. We have to be very careful when letting the dogs out at night -- raccoons, possums, skunks. Get well soon!! Love the pincushions! Very cute!

Poor little puppy!!
Those pincushion/threadcatchers are a greaat gift idea. Many of my sewing freinds have them and bring them when we meet. I know I have the pattern somwhere, maybe it's time to actually make one. Thanks for the inspiration!

I just got a new machine...with a knee lift.

When I was young, I learned to sew on a machine that had a knee lever instead of a foot pedal; I can't tell you how many times in the last week that I tried to engage the machine...by moving the knee lift! I did not know that after 35 years my brain would still pull up that old information and confuse me!

I've been thinking about making some of these pin cushion / thread catchers for a while now, but haven't found a pattern I liked. What pattern do you use? Or is it your own design? These are perfect! Love them!

Poor Flynn, talk about bad timing. I'd be missing my machine pretty badly by now, hope yours gets repaired soon. Love the scrappy pincushion with the flying geese too. I'm so curious about my pincushion, my mind is just a wondering!

Sorry to hear about Flynn! I wish him well on his road to recovery!
Your pin cushions are really nice. The thread catcher is a great idea. I still have the paper bag taped to the table. I can't wait to see the whole thing when Tiffany receives it.

Your thread catchers are fantastic...I want one, they would be perfect for holding yarn whilst crocheting too, that would stop it rolling half way across the room!!!
So sorry to here your little Dachshund got into a fist fight with a raccoon. I love sausage dogs but they are very feisty bless em! Hope he makes a quick recovery x
