Busy Baby Hands

My brother and sister-in-law just had their fifth child, a bouncing baby boy! Sadly for me, we live very far apart, so I have no idea when I might get to meet baby Iain. I have made something for all of their children, so of course I want to send Iain some handmade surprises, too.

There is something so adorable about watching babies discover their own hands, and their sense of touch. These wee loopy blankies are a perfect baby gift. At only 12" square, they are fast and easy to make up.

I used a variety of ribbon and trim scraps including twill, satin, velvet, embroidered trim and even a scrap of rubber dotted slipper sole fabric for the texture. I hope baby Iain will enjoy finding his favorite loops to love.

I backed the adorable hedgies cotton fabric square with Minky dimples. Quite possibly the softest, most baby friendly fabric on the planet. Just do ask me to sew two pieces of it together! Holy slippery mother of God. When using it for a backing, the key is to have the Minky against your feed dogs so that they can take up the excess. Works like charm.

Thanks for the warning about the terminology on this little project, Jennifer! I'll stick with wee loopy blankie!

I've got one more fun little gift to make for Iain before I send off his package. As long as Canada Post doesn't go on strike tomorrow, that is.

This is a test Krista, I am trying a different browser (opera) to see if it will let me comment!
I wanted to say that you have some really great textured ribbons there! The baby will love it!

I love this, Krista! One of these cute little blankies has been on my list for my new little one for a very long time, but it keeps getting pushed to the end of my list. Poor baby! I love the hedgies!
And thanks Amy for suggesting a different browser. I have been so frustrated with the comment problem today!

This is terrific. Most babies love the tags anyway and the slippery bit if minky makes it so cozy. I better get busy and make one for a special granddaugher who is due in a mere 10 days! She will love it and so will big brother who turns 2 soon after she arrives. he will most likely need one too. Can I copy your idea? Thank you for sharing...as always.

My neice has one of these and toddles around the house with it on her head. This is very cute and I must try some minky some time

Very cute indeed! I have never tried Minky, but I was watching my friend making one of those blankets a couple of weeks ago and saw the soft and slippery little touch of heaven in action. Congratulations on your new nephew!

I like the ribbons you used. I love these little tag blankets. I have made lots of them. It's a great little gift for a new baby. Both of my grandchildren loved theirs. Great for teething. I enjoyed visiting your blog.

I remember awhile back making 20 of those at one time. I think I have one left. I even used big rick rack to add to the mix. Great gifts and babies love them!
