Does this Hipster make me look Hip?

Hipster bag by Poppyprint

Maybe I'm trying too hard. First the app, now the bag. Hehe.

This is my Florida bag. I try to make myself a fun new bag whenever we go on vacation. I had a fat quarter set of Ruby Star Rising by Melody Miller and thought it would be perfect for this pattern. The bag is called the Hazel Hipster and it is designed by Trish of Two Peas in a Pod. I actually won the pattern during a Sew Mama Sew giveaway day over a year ago.

I made a couple of modifications. First, I added a patch pocket to the interior for my camera (with the Echino camera print - how perfect!).

The pattern is for a flat bag, but I know I'll have lots of stuff to cram in there for our flights, and also while out shopping in Orlando (my sister tells me the outlet shopping is pretty fab!). To increase the capacity a bit, I added gussets to the bottom corners.

The bag has two exterior pockets and the same ones in the inside - perfect for my phone, a pen and notebook.

All of the topstitching is done with my machine's triple straight stitch for extra strength and show-up-ability. I like to see the stitching and I find it's pretty long-lasting especially on the straps of bags that can get stretched out when you load up your bag!

My only disappointment is that I didn't have any fusible batting, so instead I used Craft-Fuse, a Pellon medium weight fusible interfacing. After cramming the bag and lining through the turning holes, I don't like how the lining pieces got all wrinkly. More ironing seems to make it worse. The linen outer bag held up well, but the lining is a quilting weight cotton and now it doesn't have a very nice appearance with that interfacing on it. I'll likely make this pattern again, so next time I'll get the right stuff!

I love it! I have this fabric and have been wondering what to do with it. I was thinking of a bag, but wasn't sure what type. I love how it turned out!

It's great! I hope you have lots of fun in Florida. Those outlet malls really are huge. I could barely contain myself in Coach, but what was really great was finding super good deals on winter ski clothing in one of the stores. Marmot soft shell pants that were never in stock at home were ironically found in 100 degree Orlando.

So cute! I'm headed to Florida too and I'm about to take a quilting break to make some new bags. I made a friend a purse last year and she's wanting a new style so I just bought the fabric for my test purse.

Have fun in Florida! Here's to hoping we get some warm weather.

Very hip! Although, for the past three days I've been pattern writing and making stuff with Echino. I use Pellons SF101 shapeflex to face it, but I think the linen does well enough on its own, i wish I would have skipped it.. Maybe next time if using the linens skip the facing and only use it on the cotton interior? I use shapeflex for everything. It holds shape well and irons nicely. Hardly wrinkles either. Have fun shopping!!

Oh, so VERY hip you are! And I'm making a note of "I like orange, too"'s recommendation about Shapeflex.

Thanks for your comment on my RBS bag. I hadn't realised that you also made one. This looks fabulous and is exactly what I am after for my upcoming holiday. I have been pondering all week about the design for a bag that is big enough to take wallet and things but has a long strap so I can wear diagonally so it can't be snatched easily. I might just have to use yours as a blueprint !!
