Doll Quilt Done

Phew, just under the wire! I'm hoping that when I post it on the Flickr group it will bring my partner out of the woodwork and she will let me know if she likes it. I sure do...it is vastly different from anything I've ever made before. I had several moments of panic as I improved my way through constructing it...thoughts of 'is this ever going to work?'. The colours are my partner's favourites and I'm hoping she likes the style, too.

I saw this painting on Flickr and received the artist's permission to use it as inspiration for my doll quilt. If it wasn't in my partner's colours, I probably wouldn't have noticed it: it provided a great starting point. The amazing colour-block work of artist Josef Albers was on my mind as I made this quilt, as well.

I began by cutting several sized squares, rectangles and strips of the blues and purples as well as 1", 1.25", 2" and 2.5" strips of Kona white. I started making units, then just jigsawed them all together, adding strips and squares where necessary to make up the final square.

I felt the composition needed some weight. So, the blue block on the right was added and I used my machine triple-stitch with white thread to quilt the squares. I think those white squares help to tie it in with the rest of the quilt (especially the column of squares on the far left side).

Now, I just have to post it and hope my partner likes it enough to hang it on her wall. Fingers crossed!

OK that is awesome. I am not usually drawn to blue/purple or geometric randomness, but this truly looks fantastic. The solid block down the right side really does tie it all together. Nice work!

If your swap partner doesn't fancy it I would be more than happy to give it wall space ;)
Beautifully done Krista! I love the graphic nature and the stitched blocks in the solid area on the right are just the right touch.

*cool* color palette! I love your choice of gradations and the overall effect reminds me of looking out over a lake in summertime as the sun goes down and blues turn to deep purple in the fading light--so calming!

It's fun to go outside of your comfort zone sometimes isn't it? I like it and I like the way you used the painting as inspiration. And you finished on time! Phew! The no sewing machine thing made it a bit more of a challenge!

What a piece of artwork! I especially love the blocks on the right side with the thick white quilting. I'd love to see an entire quilt done that way! Thanks for introducing me to the art of Joseph Albers, his colour blocking looks like a Denyse Schmidt quilt!

I'd like this to be winging it's way to me - but I know it's not, unfortunately - great job.

IT'S AWESOME! You are so brave to work outside your comfort zone. I sometimes panic IN my comfort zone (ha-ha). I so love those colors, they're favorites of mine too. Thanks for sharing the inspiration behind it.

The quilt is fantastic. And I want my bed quilt to look just like it, only king size. It reminds me of growing up in the Baker family and the art that our mum and dad often liked and was around (Krista's in-laws and my parents). They would have loved it as I do. Love CB aka SIL
