Aurilux Kapow! and a Giveaway

Windham Fabrics kindly shared some charm packs of Melissa Ybarra's new fabric line Cabana Blooms with me recently and I thought it would be fun to make up my Dresden Pillow pattern with these vibrant prints. I paired the Cabana Blooms with a DS for JoAnn Fabrics bright orange hounds tooth print. You'll see the whole thing once it's quilted, but for now I can tell you it's quite a different look from the French General version!

I was perusing my thread stash, looking for just the right colour to topstitch the dresden centre when I had a brainwave to try a variegated thread and decorative stitch.  After all, my poor Pfaff QE 4.0 rarely has the opportunity to strut her stuff and show off her killer 9mm decorative stitches because I typically stick to straight, zigzag, blanket or triple stitch.  

KAPOW!

I had a partial spool of Aurilux polyester thread leftover from quilting a bright batik quilt years ago and it was perfect. I mean, once you've got all that colour and pattern, why not add more, right? For enquiring minds, I used a regular 40wt cotton thread in the bobbin and a 90/14 Inspira quilting needle to sew this stitch through two layers of fabric and fusible Pellon polyester batting.

Oooooo-aaaaaah, shiny!

Here's a tip for those of you wondering how to choose a variegated thread: you'll get a better idea of the distribution of colours if you look at the end of the spool, not the wrapped threads.

A June Quickie

I'm running today, preparing for tomorrow's retreat. Just popping in to show you this block I finished top-stitching last night for Tracey in the VIBees quilting bee over on Flickr. Tracey sent out delicious 5" charm squares and a chunk of white for background and gave us the theme of "petals". She is expecting her second child and plans to use her blocks for an "if it's a girl quilt".

I hardly made a dent in Tracey's charm squares, so I used a few more to make her this little tag blankie for her baby, and to say thanks for organizing such a fun bee!

There is soft-as-a-dream minky on the back again.

I think June is shaping up to be a really fun month on Poppyprint. I've got lots to share and talk about with you! You'll notice I'm dangerously close to 500 followers (WOWEE!), and you know what that means....yes, there will be a giveaway soon! Maybe even two (more exciting news).

Round and Round (Full Circle Full Frontal).

It's done! My Robert Kaufman Kona Solids quilt challenge for the VMQG is complete. You've seen the pieced top, then the beginning of my concentric circle quilting. Now, I present Full Circle to you....

Thank you to everyone who 'voted' for charcoal and celery binding. The results were about even, and as you can see, I decided on celery because I liked the look of the colour blocks floating on a sea of green.

Why Full Circle? Well, first of all this quilt was always intended as a relief quilt for someone who has suffered loss from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan; my hope is that this will bring them warmth and comfort as they work through their grief and regain their home, work and community (hopefully, one day, coming full circle in recovery). Secondly, after piecing the quilt top, I really thought of the west coast sunset. My mind then wandered to the Ring of Fire...the chain of volcanoes that geologically connects our west coast with Japan, and how it forms a circle around the Pacific nations. Finally, the quilt just seemed to be calling out for concentric circle quilting. I changed thread colours as I moved outwards from the golden squares into the rusty reds, dark brown/black, blue/purple and finally green. I kept the bobbin thread dark grey.

After the kids were off to school yesterday and I walked into the dining room to begin darning in my thread ends (yes, I tie the top and bobbin threads with a double knot, then bury them into the quilt batting using a Fons and Porter gold-eye self-threading needle. I don't like the look of backstitching on the front of a quilt) and lo and behold the sun was shining through the window for the first time in DAYS. I moved the quilt around to line up the sun and the shadow of a glass star that hangs in our window over the 'sun' in the quilt. Pretty.

The back of the quilt is made up of a few 1/2 yard cuts I won at a retreat a few years back. They are not my really my colours, so they've been curing in my stash since the retreat. I was very happy to use them in this quilt because they are from a Japanese-inspired Alexander Henry collection and Kona charcoal goes great with them!

Since I don't have a cottage, or drink beer, I'll be in the garden, pulling weeds to give the perennials some real estate for the summer....
