Just Verifying

Can you use any of the following in a sentence?

VISMON
ZATABULL
LELYZDY
SQUISEEN
REARIZU
KUMP24
OVENG
INGEN
DEPANITE
PLATOM
AEUPUM

Me neither. Well, maybe I'll be squiseen a lemon into my glass of water later. This is a list of all the word verifications I had to enter in order to post comments on my regular blog reads yesterday (I'm a habitual commenter - I like people to know I appreciate their work, plus I am a major chatterbox). So, here's the thing. I read/follow a lot of blogs. I'm starting to get a little annoyed with the extra 'word verification' step every time I want to share some love. There is a word verification on my comments here at Poppyprint, too, but maybe I'll turn that off so it doesn't annoy YOU! Does it annoy you?

For those of you that don't have word verification employed, do you get random weirdo comments from interweb trollers? People trying to sell you stuff? Cuz if none of that ever happens, I think I'll turn it off.

Please advise.

{ETA: Okay, I've ditched word verification based on the # of people who are (a) annoyed by it (like me) and (b) say they don't have verification for their comments and don't get any spam. Thanks for the great feedback!!}

I turned off the word verification on my blog recently. I've gotten three or four spam comments since then, but they never showed up on my blog, they go into a spam box on my blogger dashboard and I can just delete them there. I think Blogger's spam blocker is pretty good now, so I don't feel the need to turn my word verification back on (yet).

Another tip I read somewhere is, if you turn off word verification, turn ON comment moderation for posts older than two weeks old. I do have that enabled, but the spam messages I've had on newer posts have gone into my spam box anyway, so I'm not sure how much that's necessary.

Hmmm, good point! I'm going to try to turn mine off, if I can figure it out, that is! It can be annoying, especially when I'm in a rush but just have to get that comment in!

The word verification doesn't annoy me, but there are some blogs where I have to press "post comment" multiple times to get it to work before I even get to the word verification request. That's a bit annoying. Doesn't stop me though. I like to receive comments on my blog so I try to say hello wherever I go.

I took word verification off my comments yesterday and almost immediately got a weird spammy comment...so I put it back on. Small price to pay, I think.

I have the same issues as Rachel on some blogs - it takes me lots of clicks to leave the comment (even without word verification). I wonder if mine's like that - is it?

I got rid of the word verification, too - I have yet to get any spam at all. While the nerd in me delights when my verification word is actually a word, it's more of a pain than anything. It doesn't stop me from commenting, though.

I love it when I get to a blog where I just comment and press enter and "ta da" I am done. I think I comment less if I know there is word verification.
I took mine off my blog and have never had any issues.

Hi Krista, I don’t have word verification on my blog, but I have a Wordpress blog. I never receive strange comments in my email inbox. The weird comments can be found on my blog dashboard and I delete them.

I don’t mind leaving comments on a blog that asks for word verification, but I only leave comments when I really have something to say.

I have never had any spam or weird comments...and yes the word verification gets old after a while :)

Word Verification annoys me too! :-) I do not have it on my blog and I have had 1 weird comment in the past 200 posts. I simply deleted it and that was that.

I turned off my word verification about 9 months ago, and I haven't had any spam :) I love it when blogs don't have it!

Jenny said...

yay! i just turned off my word verification.
i agree, i find them annoying.

word verification isn't as much of a pain if it is visible at the same time as making the comment rather than submitting your comment only to find out that you're not done and have to verify with a word! ANNOYING!!!

I took the word away at the very beginning of my blog in 2009 and can count on one hand the # of times I've had spam.
no biggie. just delete and move on.

I'm with some of the others on repeated clicking of the post comment box to get a comment registered. I love comments and I love commenting, but please make it easier, people!

Brenda said...

ps. I had to click four times to get the above comment posted. is that a settings issue or something else?

I'm with Felicity--I always get a chuckle when my word verification is a real word.

I don't have word verification on my blog, and I've received very few spam comments. Maybe 4 or 5 in the past year.

It really annoys me. Mine is turned off and anonymous commenters can comment and I have had no SPAM whatsoever, not even one except my 13 year old son posing as deranged middle aged quilters who are quite rude to me or my Mum who also leaves rude or comedy comments or my older sister who always leaves comedy comments or my younger sister who also posed as a middle aged quilting lady who "lost her sister to quilting late last fall" and I didn't even get it was her! Still makes me laugh. The word I have to write now to leave a comment on your blog is: imonahorse.

I turned mine off - blogger has spam control now, and so far it's caught everything. I just check my dashboard now and then to see if there are any spam comments, [that never make it to the blog] and I delete them. LOVE it.

I find it annoying especially when it takes a while to load and I don't realize it's popped up. Sometimes I write a comment only to realize hours later that I never verified. Plus, it's a waste of my time!

Just here testing whether my word verification is really turned off!

Regina said...

I don't think I have it on mine and haven't been spammed yet. *knock on wood* Hope you don't get spammed either.

I hate when it refreshes and leaves you at the top of the page and you were supposed to go to the bottom to put in the verification then it turns out I never left it...oops.

Ok, it bugs me but I don't know how to turn it off. Enlighten me and I will get right to it.

HaHa..it looks like you are speaking a new language !! It is a bit of a nuisance, but if it stops spam, I am all for it!!

Ok, I'm persuaded! I'm turning mine off, too!

I hate the word verification too! BUT -- I hated the multiple ads for enlarging my 'member' even more. >:-O

After reading through these comments, I'll try to turn it off again... but I'm telling you Krista -- if I get comments about parts I don't even have again... it's going back on! ;)

I was getting weird spam even with the word verification turned on so I turned it off and just have Comment moderation and it seems to work much better.

I drive my husband crazy by reading out the nonsense words for word verification. I am glad that I am not the only one that is bothered by this and I am going to turn it off my blog too. I was trying to do something the other night and I kept messing up on the word and having to try again!!! Crazy!!!

BUTWAYIN - that's what I just had to type in order to comment on another blog.

AMEN! Can't stand word verification. Don't have it. Never get spammed! Go to it, Krista!

I am SO glad you posted on this topic. I have been wondering the very same thing lately. So I'm off to my blogger account to turn off word verification.

It annoys me too, and that's why I turned off the word verification system for my blog too. I do get random comments (ads) because of it though, but it seems like Blogger is getting better at noticing those comments and deleting them before I delete them myself. It's funny. I receive emails to notify those annoying comments being received, but when I click to go delete them, they are gone. I think it's totally worth it to remove the word verification system.

Oh, funny enough, there is one word in the list that I have used in sentences. Ingen. It means green beans in Japanese LOL

I turned mine off for a while, but immediately started getting spam comments, so turned it back on reluctantly. I might try again, since that was before the new spam features on blogger though.

Amelia said...

Yes it annoys me too! Thanks for this post, it's made me realise that I have word verification on mine too. Now it's all turned off .... fingers crossed!

I don't have any, thinking that if I get weird messages I can alwasy turn it on, but so far so good!

Good for you! I hate that word verification too!

Some serious chuckle time reading the comments on this post Krista! I love people with a sense of humour!! I was relieved to find out that it wasn't just me who had problems with multiple clicks to get a post to work..whew!!

Krista said...

I like it! And I'm going to copy you and do it on my blog too.

Love it! So, I hate the verifications too (I realize I'm a little late to the input party, but it's been kind of a rough week...) and nothing annoys me more than when you write your comment, hit submit and THEN the verification pops up. I don't mind so much when it's all on the same screen, but the second round of clicking submit is the worst. I'll admit, I have closed many a tab and lost my comment completely because I didn't wait long enough to click submit again. If you get any awesome spammy comments you'll have to post them so we can all laugh. (PS- your use of the word "squiseen" is pretty fantastic too.)

Nina Lise@Mrs Moen said...

Yup, I can use INGEN in a sentence, it's Norwegian for none, but you're onto something there. Maybe I should turn mine off too.

Mama Spark said...

I got creepers in my comments so turned it back on. I just didn't want to deal with that and was a little nervous about viruses living in the spam. Hey, that's just me.
