I purchased this sprung chair at a garage sale for $5 about 18 years ago, I think. B & I were in our first rented apartment together after university. It was covered in a tattered emerald green boucle fabric. I spray painted the legs, removed the wooden arms and used the original cover as a pattern to cut a new one. This Navajo-inspired fabric (above) was used for it's second recovering. Our first couch was upholstered with that fabric and I bought some extra to do the chair so they'd match. The fabric was a big disappointment. It did not wear well and faded terribly, as you can see (ok, this is 15 years old, so maybe I'm being a little too judgemental). Needless to say, the couch is long gone!
It was time for an update - especially since this chair sits in the corner of our playroom, my parent's temporary bedroom when they visit! I bought a new staple gun, a package of upholstery tacks and set aside a Sunday afternoon.
Hello Mr. Dewberry!
Joel Dewberry's Ginseng home-dec weight fabric which I got for a song during a Sew Mama Sew sale last fall.
I layered some new batting on top of the old stuff. I've always loved this chair - I think mostly for it's lines. The back and underneath still need a dust cover, but as long as it is tucked into the corner, no one needs to know!
Recovering furniture ranks right up there with painting for a relatively low-cost/low time-investment do-over with high impact. I love how this turned out!
